  6. calculus, he refined the concepts of the
  7. limit and the definite integral. In 1843 he
  8. published a defence of academic freedom of
  9. thought that was instrumental in the
  10. abolition of the oath of allegiance soon
  11. after the fall of Louis Philippe in 1848.
